Buddy List Icons

Buddy List Icons

Can we have the option to have the buddy list icons somehow show what protocol is being used? This used to be the case for a while, but now they just show much less information than before while being no easier to use, etc.. This was a dumb decision but Sean Egan was convinced that he was right. It seems like it would be pretty easy to add an option to use the old per-protocol icons.

gaim-style medium icons

yes! A lot of people prefer the old icons from gaim which show which medium the contact is on. I'm still using Gaim instead of Pidgin because of this.

Couldn't Agree More!

I really miss the old plugins that show the protocol that users are on. I have NO idea why anyone thought that was a good idea.

Thanks!

Pidgin DOES has the Protocol Icons!!!

After Sean got ripped apart for removing the protocol icons in the 2.1 launch, it was re-added about a month later in another release. It's currently there in the Buddy List under Buddies->Show->Protocol Icons.

There! We can stop being upset that they were removed and move on!

Thanks, but ugh

Somehow I missed that that existed, but I'd really rather have the icons as the icons on the left and not all the way over on the side.

Seconded, BotenAnna

I agree to what BotenAnna said.. showing the icons on the right, instead of replacing those gold circles, makes it look cluttery.

Anyway, if any funPidgin developers feel challenged to do this, please, it would be nice if you can implement it? I don't wanna sound naggy and bitchy about it :p

Like Rohan, I still use Gaim (2.0 beta6) because of this feature, and because I think Pidgin is a stupid name...

And BotenAnna, cool nick.

Done

Ok I made an option to have gaim-like buddy list icons. It was my first time creating a new function and putting it in a header file so it can be used by other C files.

half-assed "compromises" don't cut it

The protocol icons on the right is NOT a solution. It's a half-assed attempt at a compromise to shut us users up. Cluttering the buddy list window more, while leaving the fugly green orbs there to show online status on their own is not my idea of a nice looking MULTI-PROTOCOL IM client.

+1 for adding in protocol icons as status icons into funpidgin

Agreed

This is why I'm still on Gaim 2.0.0b5. Please make it an option to get rid of the green orbs. It would also be nice to have available/away/idle versions of the protocol icons as well.

(On a related note, I'd also like to have available a third-party smiley theme to use the native emoticons on the AIM protocol.)

Merged status and protocol icons

For example, the Yahoo protocol icon is a red "Y", while the status icon is a green/blue/red/grey circle. So merge these and make a protocol-status icon that's a green/blue/red/grey "Y".

For example, the MSN protocol icon is a butterfly, while the status icon is a green/blue/red/grey circle. So merge these and make a protocol-status icon that's a green/blue/red/grey butterfly.

And so on for as many protocols.

screenshots?

can anyone running linux post a screenshot of the new buddy list format that's like the old gaim (which i'm using in vista) (blurrig the screen names of course). I'm running windows now but can't install newest version cuz no windows compile yet. thanks.

I'm not crazy about the green

I'm not crazy about the green orbs, but what about merged contacts? If my friend "John Doe" is signed onto MSN and XMPP, which protocol icon will it show?

While poking around with the

While poking around with the buddy list icons, how about adding a method for giving icons to buddies without icons. And making all the icons stick. I can't find one IM client that can do this.
